While many people know Bali for its beaches, sunsets, and trendy cafés, I have come to enjoy a different side of Bali through canyoning activities in the Sambangan area of North Bali. As an assistant guide at Canyoning Bali, I spend almost every day among rivers, waterfalls, and rocky cliffs alongside tourists seeking a unique adventure experience during their holiday in Bali.
At first, I never imagined that I would work in Bali’s adventure tourism industry like this. However, after spending more time in the canyon and accompanying visitors from various countries, I realized that canyoning is not only about extreme sports, but also about experiencing the natural beauty of Bali in a completely different way.
Every morning before the trip begins, the instructors and I prepare all the equipment needed for the canyoning activities. Starting from helmets, harnesses, wetsuits, ropes, gloves, and canyoning shoes, everything must be carefully inspected. Since Samba Canyon is classified as an intermediate-level canyon, the preparation is more detailed compared to beginner canyons. The route is longer and the activities are more challenging, so the condition of the equipment and the participants’ safety are always our top priorities.
Before the journey starts, participants usually attend a briefing session. Many guests come to try their first Bali adventure experience. Some appear relaxed, while others feel nervous after hearing that the trip includes rappelling, cliff jumping, and swimming through the river.
As an assistant guide, my job is not only to help participants wear their safety equipment. I also assist them throughout the journey, from giving directions and supporting them during rappelling to calming those who are afraid of heights. One of the most fascinating things about Samba Canyon Bali is its extraordinary natural scenery. Even from the photos on the brochures, you can already see small waterfalls flowing between black rocks and lush green trees. Once you enter the canyon area, the atmosphere feels peaceful and untouched. Sometimes, on bright mornings, sunlight shines through the gaps in the trees, making the river sparkle beautifully. Moments like these often make participants stop for a while just to enjoy the view or take photos.
During a canyoning trip at Samba Canyon, participants usually experience various exciting activities such as rappelling down waterfalls up to 35 meters high, jumping into natural pools, sliding over river rocks, and swimming along the canyon stream. In my opinion, this canyon is perfect for travelers who want to try a more thrilling Bali extreme adventure compared to beginner-level canyons. Since it is categorized as intermediate level, participants also need good stamina throughout the journey.
One of the most exciting moments is when participants attempt their first jump into a natural pool. Many of them are initially scared and hesitant, but after successfully making the jump, they usually laugh and immediately want to try again. After completing the canyoning trip, we usually return to the basecamp to shower and enjoy lunch while reviewing the photos and videos taken during the Samba Canyon adventure.
As an assistant guide in the world of canyoning, I often see how canyoning can help people become more confident. Many participants who were initially afraid of heights or water feel proud after successfully completing the journey. In addition, working in Canyoning Bali has brought me closer to the natural beauty of North Bali. Almost every day, I can enjoy the sound of waterfalls, the fresh air, and the atmosphere of the untouched forest.
One of the things I remember most while working in canyoning is the sense of togetherness that develops during the trip. Participants who did not know each other at the beginning usually become close after overcoming challenges together inside the canyon.
Sometimes, there are participants who feel extremely afraid at the start of the trip. Some even say that they are unsure if they can complete the canyon. However, with support and encouragement from the instructors, they eventually manage to overcome every challenge until the end. Moments like these make me feel that being an assistant guide is truly rewarding. It is not only about working in tourism, but also about witnessing people overcome their fears and gain unforgettable new experiences.
Beyond the challenges, canyoning also offers the opportunity to experience Bali’s nature from a different perspective. Many tourists only realize afterward that Bali has many hidden natural spots that are beautiful and perfect for outdoor activities. In Samba Canyon itself, the environment remains incredibly natural. The river is crystal clear, the rock cliffs are massive, and the sound of the waterfalls creates a peaceful atmosphere despite the adventurous activities.
In my opinion, canyoning is not only about seeking adrenaline. It is also about appreciating nature, teamwork, building courage, and creating unforgettable memories during a holiday in Bali. Therefore, if you are looking for a different experience beyond beaches or beach clubs, trying Canyoning Bali at Samba Canyon is definitely something worth experiencing. Besides enjoying an exciting adventure, you will also discover another side of Bali that remains natural and full of adventure.
For me personally, becoming an assistant guide at Canyoning Bali is not just a job, but also a life experience filled with exciting stories every single day. Every journey always brings new challenges, new people, and new experiences amidst the beauty of North Bali’s nature.
